Obituary for Benson Benton Sr.
Benson A. Benton Sr. born in Berry Brook, NY on December 22, 1917 passed away peacefully on May 14, 2017. He graduated from high school in Roscoe, New York in 1935 after which he worked in industry for several years in Lockport and Niagara Falls, NY. During World War II he served in the United States Army Signal Corp in both Europe and Asia and was discharged in 1946.
He married his beloved wife, Florence on April 6, 1947. He then attended the University of Buffalo, NY for two years and then attended Houghton College, NY for two more years, graduating in 1951. He completed his ministerial studies through Emery University in Georgia. As an ordained minister, he served three churches – Holland, Eden and Sanborn – in the Western New York Conference (now Upper New York Conference) of the United Methodist Church, retiring in 1983. He served on the District Board of Trustees and the Minimum Salary Commission in that conference. He then served as a Minister of Visitation for the St. James United Methodist Church in Niagara Falls, NY until 2007. He served as chairman of the Board for the St. James United Methodist Church for several years.
He was a member and Past Master of Ransomville Masonic Lodge #551, member of the Scottish Rite in Buffalo and a Grand Chaplain for the Grand Lodge of the State of New York. He was Past Patron of the Ransomville Order of the Eastern Star #374, He was also a member of Nihawk Council of Universal Craftsman Council of Engineers #10 and Grand Worthy Chief of that organization in 1990.
He was predeceased by his wife, Florence J. Benton, brothers Robert H. Benton Sr., Paul Benton (Leah), and Bill Benton (Kitty). He is survived by his three children: Benson A. Benton, Jr. (Judy), Hugh M. Benton II (Rebecca), and Helen Smith (David). He is also survived by six granddaughters and 5 great-grandchildren.
There will be a Memorial service at St. James United Methodist Church on June 24th at 10:00 AM followed by a Masonic service. Interment will be at Acacia Cemetery, North Tonawanda, New York at 12:30 PM.
