Obituary for Mary Tracy (Blinn)
Mary Blinn Tracy
Former West Haven City Clerk
Mary Blinn Tracy, 96, a longtime West Haven resident, entered into rest on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. She was the wife of the late Richard L. Tracy Sr. and mother of Richard (Nancy), Robert (Barbara), Kathy (Sue), Karen (Kathleen), and the late Stephen Tracy. She leaves six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sisters Grace, Barbara, Betty, and Patty and her brother Jim.
After raising her children and working in the private sector, Mary spent many years serving the City of West Haven as a volunteer and as an elected official. She participated on a number of boards and commissions because of her interest in improving the city. She was in charge of the summer concert series for many years, coordinated the city’s beautification project and chaired West Haven’s 75th anniversary committee. Mary was also a member of the Charter Revision Committee and the Holiday Festivities committee. The highlight of her volunteer service was serving as Director for West Haven’s venues when the World Special Olympics came to West Haven in 1994.
A member of the Democratic Party for many years, Mary served former Mayor Robert Johnson as secretary and later as the administrator in the city’s grants-in-aid and community development office. After leaving City Hall she was elected to the City Council, representing the 10th district in 1993. She ended her elected service to the city in 2000 after serving for four years as City Clerk.
Less visible than her public service was Mary’s devotion to her family, ensuring that her children and grandchildren grew up in a loving, vibrant home and family network. That spirit eventually extended throughout the country as children grew up and moved away, returning often for visits and holidays with spouses and great-grandchildren, who were her greatest joys. Mary’s energy and love for life spread to her fellow residents and staff at Maplewood at Orange, CT, where she lived for the last seven years.
Visitation will take place Friday 4-7pm at West Haven Funeral Home at the Green. All are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Saturday morning at 9am at Our Lady of Victory Church. Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery. In keeping with Mary’s generous spirit please consider bringing a new toy for the Toys For Tots Program to the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green. Monetary donations may be made to the Toys for Tots Program at toysfortots.org.
